Hani, the freed slave of Uthman, reported: Uthman would stop by a grave and he would weep until his beard was wet. It was said, “You remember Paradise and Hellfire but you do not weep, yet you weep because of this?” He said: I have heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said, “Verily, the grave is the first stage of the Hereafter, so whoever is saved from it, then whatever comes afterwards will be easier for him; but if he is not saved from it, then whatever comes afterward will be harder for him. I have never seen any sight except that the grave is more frightening than it.”

[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book of Asceticism, Number 2308, Hasan]

هَانِئًا مَوْلَى عُثْمَانَ قَالَ  كَانَ عُثْمَانُ إِذَا وَقَفَ عَلَى قَبْرٍ بَكَى حَتَّى يَبُلَّ لِحْيَتَهُ فَقِيلَ لَهُ تُذْكَرُ الْجَنَّةُ وَالنَّارُ فَلَا تَبْكِي وَتَبْكِي مِنْ هَذَا فَقَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِنَّ الْقَبْرَ أَوَّلُ مَنْزِلٍ مِنْ مَنَازِلِ الْآخِرَةِ فَإِنْ نَجَا مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَيْسَرُ مِنْهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْجُ مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا رَأَيْتُ مَنْظَرًا قَطُّ إِلَّا الْقَبْرُ أَفْظَعُ مِنْهُ

قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ
